Bowerbirds offer up a cross between a bayou jug band playing in the heat of the Arabian desert with a choral group from Wisconsin in full flowing robes. That the band consists of only three people is a bit surprising after hearing the glorious chorus of voices on their debut Hymns For A Dark Horse. Phil Moore, married to Beth Tacular, and Mark Paulson make music that feels so organic you’re certain they’re standing barefoot in a forest with a light dusting of dewdrops over the drum skins as they play.

The album is out on the small Burly Time Records label, and available as of July 10, 2007.

Sometimes the world works in mysterious ways. Take Metric, for instance, whose very first album never got to see the light of day because of record company bureaucratic bull shit. Eh, it happens. While this album sat on the shelf waiting for someone to save it form the great big dustbin of life, Metric kept on plugging away, playing, writing, recording and growing. It got so that the even though the band members that recorded that first, lost album were still the same people, the band itself–their sound etc.–was quite a different beast. So, they released Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? and called it their debut album, knowing full well that the REAL first album was something else all together. Then they released Live It Out which was something different again, and… well you catch my drift.
So, finally, and without further ado, run out and get yourself Grow Up And Blow Away, the real first album by Metric, and the third they’ve released, and not a new album but a new old album. My head hurts now. Not from the music but from all this crap.
