4 for the weekend vol. 34

Well the road to good health has been slow and very uneven, but I was able to muster up some energy to get this weekend’s 4 picks up and running. Thanks to all the well wishes I’ve been receiving–they’ve helped spur my recovery along. As always, if you want to win these four CDs, drop your name in the 4 for the Weekend discussion forum on the QBiM Facebook page, and say you want vol. 34. This contest closes, Sunday, March 30, at 11:59 pm.

Liz Tormes “Read My Mind”
[Limelight, 2007, Velour]

Like Martha Wainwright and touring partner Teddy Thompson, New York singer-songwriter Liz Tormes‘ unique pipes and classic styling make her debut album a late-night, smokey classic.

Ottawa-based Hilotrons release their third album of hyped-up funk, new wave and epic soundtrack recordings on April Fool’s Day, but you’d not be a fool checking out one of the nation’s capital’s best live acts.

Ladyhawk “I Don’t Always Know What You’re Saying”
[Shots, 2008, Jagjaguwar]

British Columbians Ladyhawk create a ghostly, haunting sound that stalks you at night down lonely alleyways and dark, secluded corners where your dreams and nightmares can’t get to sleep.

The Diggs “Careen”
[Crtl-Alt-Del, 2008, Sugarspun]

The Diggs‘ latest album Ctrl-Alt-Del, has a min-nineties rock pedigree of the highest order, and rocks accordingly. The combination of dream pop, indie rock and pop sensibilities make it a tempting affair.
