CONTEST: Chad VanGaalen’s Soft Airplane

The other week, I mentioned my involvement in i (heart) music‘s hottest bands in Canada countdown, where some of the country’s most prominent bloggers (*smile*) weighed in on who they feel are the movers and shakers worth watching in the coming year.
Topping the list this year was Calgarian Chad VanGaalen, whose eclectic new album, Soft Airplane (Flemish Eye Records) has been topping CBC Radio 3′s Top 30 for the past few weeks. VanGaalen makes what he does seem so easy and simple, when in reality, the songs are a complex web of style and substance, texture and toughness. Soft Airplane picks up where his previous two releases left off–alone in his bedroom, working in isolation with nothing but his own thoughts and preoccupations. Death is still the topic de jour, but the songs themselves sparkle with life and vitality. The man is still very much an enigma, but this is one jigsaw puzzle you won’t pull your hair out trying to solve.
