EX~PO
Dean Marino is a Toronto-based producer/engineer who’s worked with the likes of Born Ruffians, Tokyo Police Club, Amy Millan, and C’MON. He can now add performer to his CV: Under the name EX~PO, Marino recently released Central Meaner Street, a rough-and-tumble collection of scuzzy, indie-rock/power-pop songs. Marino’s influences are far-reaching: Kevin Shields, Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello, Sonic Youth, Wayne Coyne, and Jason Pierce all come to mind in one form or another. But don’t for a second think that Marino’s music is bereft of any originality. Central Meaner Street transcends its influences to deliver a remarkably focused, and original sound. This is the kind of album that demands repeated listens.
Marino is the kind of career musician that knows what he likes, and knows what he’s doing. His skill in the studio is clearly evident; the tracks are clean, with some rough edges adding nice textures. He’s no slouch when it comes to marketing his wares, either: Central Meaner Street comes with artwork by Marino himself, and is available as a limited edition 12″ LP, an enhanced CD with live material and bonus tracks, or as a digital download.
