Robots in love

The Maynards are taking their party out of bounds with a new collection of dance floor-filling, gritty guitar rock ‘n’ roll.  I figure they’re Halifax, Nova Scotia’s version of The B-52′s: irreverent, catchy, and a whole lotta fun.  Heath Matheson (vocals, guitar), Kristina Parlee (vocals, bass) and Chantal Tardiff (vocals, drums) could very well be your far-too-clever distant cousins, the ones whose cynicism and sarcasm fly over the heads of your older family members, but smacks you right in the face like a blunt object.  You want to hate them, but deep down you yearn to be as cool and hip as they are.  In the end, you smirk and join in their authority-taunting, hoping they never turn their vicious wit on you.

Check out The Maynards new album, If you think you’re cool enough to handle the party.  Date and Destroy drops into your record retailers (online and in store) today.

After having heard them on the soundtrack to Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, I’ve taken a shine to LA indie-pop band Army Navy. I got a link to their latest video, “My Thin Sides” the other day, which features Paul Scheer, who is apparently someone of note on MTV.  I noted that he appeared naked in this video far too often.

Last year’s Swedish darling Loney Dear have announced that Polyvinyl Records will be releasing their next album in early 09.  Dear John will feature their latest single, “Airport Surroundings” which is streaming right now.  I’m not sure I like it yet, but it’s full studio sound is definitely a step forward.  I guess I have a soft spot in my heart for solitary bedroom music makers.

Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins fame (what do you mean you’ve never heard of Cocteau Twins??) has remixed a track by Brooklyn’s School Of Seven Bells.  I’d not really heard of them before this remix came my way, but I’m thinking this is something worth checking out.
