That’s The Spirit
I’ve been finding myself really busy lately, and feel as if I’ve been neglecting my blogging duties. Even as I write this post, I have about a dozen other things that need tending to, but my obsessive compulsive nature won’t let me take a day off mid-week from QBiM. Forgive me for the quick post then, but rest assured it’s worth the time and effort.
That’s The Spirit is Ottawa’s Ben Wilson,a multi-instrumentalist who has just released his debut LP, Staying Places on Antique Room Records. Wilson is known among the Ottawa music scene, and has been playing his own unique brand of indie-pop with a various supporting musicians for some time now. Earlier this year he started work on what would become Staying Places, narrowing down the 25 songs he recorded to the final 12 which made the cut. It’s an impressive collection of dreamlike melodies and gorgeous arrangements, and make you wonder what the tracks that didn’t make the album must be like. Wilson isn’t afraid to let the ideas flow and cross sounds and genres without straying too far from the musical blueprint. I’m particularly impressed by “The Blue of Distance”, “Orienteering”, and “Head For the Hills”.
