Great Zeus!!

I’m not Chromewaves.  Or I Guess I’m Floating.  Or Gorilla vs Bear.  Or–well, you get the picture.  I am just a small little blog, coming to you from the middle of nowhere.  I don’t get the big scoops, or the exclusive mp3s.  I’m like that kid in high school who, while not shunned by the cool kids, didn’t exactly get to hang out with them on the weekends.  Maybe the geeks and nerds liked him, but he had higher ambitions.  The point I’m trying to make here is that I don’t often get to “break” a new band, because that happens well before I ever hear of them, but maybe this time, in the case of Zeus, I’m going to be the “you heard it here first” guy.  Maybe.

Not too far back, I posted about Mike O’Brien and Carlin Nicholson, both members of Jason Collett’s touring band, and members of Paso Mino, who have a new band called Zeus.  Their sound is a blend of experimental folk rock, with touches of cabaret, and a sweet 70s-MOR touch that makes you want to fall in love with them instantly.  At the time, they didn’t have any recorded material available, except for some demos streaming on Myspace.  That was then, and this is now:  Arts & Crafts has two tracks from Zeus’s debut album, Something Awesome, due sometime in Spring 2009.  If these tracks are anything to go by, then this is going to be a killer album.  “How Does It Feel”  has an early Elton John/Billy Joel-like vibe that makes it sound like a classic track from the past that time forgot.  “I Know” has a “Stuck In The Middle” groove going on, that also makes it sound like a retro 70s lost nugget.

2009 is starting to look like a very good year for music, my friends, and high on my list of anticipated releases is Zeus.  There is no indication that the band has signed to Arts & Crafts (they are listed as “unsigned” on their Myspace page), and there are no other release details available yet, but you can be sure that as soon as I get more information, I’ll be passing it along your way.
