If you’d never heard of Wellington, New Zealand’s Phillipa “Pip” Brown, and her musical alter-ego Ladyhawke before, you probably have no trouble imagining what her music would sound like just by looking at a list of her label mates on Modular Records:  Chromeo, MSTKRT, Cut Copy, Klaxons, and Robyn.  If even that bit of information leaves you scratching your head, then you’re probably better off not worrying about Ladyhawke at all.

If I’ve managed to pique your interest with the above list, then you’re definitely in for a treat.  Brown started off her musical career with a series of grunge-pop bands that took her from her home in New Zealand to Melbourne Australia, where she eventually decided to go her own way and work seriously on Ladyhawke, a project she says “could put a smile on peoples faces and give them a feeling of nostalgia even though they may be hearing my songs for the first time. I love how music evokes memories of a certain time, I wanted to see if I could find a method of songwriting that would evoke those feelings from me on writing the song and then on the individual when listening to it for the first time.”  The time she evokes stretches from late 1970s through the electro-pop revolution of the 1980s, and even if you aren’t old enough to recall those by-gone days, you’ll easily be able to place her musical influences.  This is infectious disco-pop of the highest order.  It may induce the desire to where neon headbands, and where high-top sneakers with scrunchy socks.  Even in males.
