CONTEST: Woodpigeon Treasury Library Canada CDs!

Calgary’s Woodpigeon are flying their sophomore disc, Treasury Library Canada into town on February 3rd, along with a bonus disc of new material called Houndstooth Europa.  Main pigeon Mark Hamilton’s gift of setting the vistas and grandeur of Canada’s landscape to music is soon to be the gift of three lucky QBiM readers, thanks to Boompa Records.

To enter, just email your name and mailing address to CONTESTS [AT] QUICKBEFOREITMELTS [DOT] COM.  In honour of the album’s title, and in order to make you work for this disc, I want you to name for me either your favourite Canadian novel or author in the subject line of your email.  It would be nice if you’d post your answer in the comments section of this post, too, but I’m not going to make that a requirement for entering the contest.  Contest close at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, January 23rd.

You might recall a post I did awhile back about Swedish band The Sweet Serenades.  They have a new track streaming at Myspace called “Smack You Up”.  I said earlier that I’m really anticipatinh hearing their debut album, and this infectious little ditty doesn’t disappoint.

And while we’re on the subject of Myspace, last week I got a query email from a young man in Seattle named Justin Ripley whose just discovered that he’s released an EP (shocking!)  and it’s actually pretty cool (super shocking!).  I don’t usually have much luck when I delve into the inbox, but I think this guy’s got a unique sounding voice, and decent songwriting ability (I’m really digging “The Guns of Amazon”).  It’s all very lo-fi but that’s part of the charm.  Check his Myspace page out, and get yourself a copy of the disc (he’s giving it away for free it appears).

Favorite Canadian author is WP Kinsella, who wrote Shoeless Joe the book that the movie Field of Dreams was based on) and another one of the same vein called The Iowa Baseball Confederacy. Brilliant, amazing books.

I’d forgotten that Kinsella was Canadian. How ironic, don’t you think?

Hey you know what? I just realized this is QBiM’s 700th post! Isn’t that cool?

I wouldn’t even know where to begin with my favourite Canadian author. I recently read Sinclair Ross’ As For Me and My House and loved it as well as Gabrielle Roy’s The Tin Flute and loved that too but they are the only works by those authors that I have read. As non-traditional Canadian Lit. as it goes I’ve read some William Gibson and have been totally blown away.

My favorite Canadian author is Margaret Atwood, and “The Handmaid’s Tale” is a chilling masterpiece.
