Marty Anderson isn’t the kind of guy to let a little thing like a rare, chronic stomach disorder keep him from expressing his creativity and talent, even if it keeps him confined to his home and tethered to IV. Once the front man for California-based band Dilute, and one half of the duo Howard Hello, Anderson is currently working under the pseudonym Okay, releasing his minimalist pop constructions via the Absolutely Kosher label. In 2005 he released two albums worth of songs (High Road and Low Road) and last year added Huggable Dust, an 18-song collection of personal ruminations about the everyday.
In an article in Alarm magazine, Anderson said, “I never wanted to put these songs out before because I never really—you know they were personal… But then the more I listened to them and the longer it went on I realized that I felt that they were good enough to put out. To me it’s just kind of like a purging of that material. Every song has some sort of sentimental attachment.” Anderson also went on to say that he hopes the bed-bound artist angle that many have approached his work starts to fade into the distance, and the music be allowed to speak for itself. “Everybody has their stuff to deal with. It shouldn’t have anything to do with whether you like the music or not. I don’t think it’s necessary.”
Apparently, Anderson has two more album’s worth of material recorded, showing no sign of his creative spark dimming. His positive attitude towards life and his situation has been the fuel for his creative fire; lucky for us we get to bask in its warm glow. Marty Anderson is Okay, in more than just name, he’s okay with his world, and making ours a little better along the way, too.
