Space age love song

There’s a new Handsome Furs album coming out March 10th, and I for one am pretty pumped about it. Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry are following up their pretty excellent 2007 debut Plague Park with Face Control, a new collection of cold, angular electronic beats and disembodied guitar sounds that paint a bleak and desolate landscape on the human condition.
As with their last album, Face Control is inspired by place as much as time. Handsome Furs songs are very much of the now–modern and new–but there’s always an underlying sense that the modern and most advance technology isn’t always the best thing for the human soul. We’re left adrift trying to deal with the complexities of human emotions and experiences through digital technology that pixelates and digitizes and streams our hopes and fears around the world and back again before we even know what’s happened to us. There’s confusion, uncertainty, and a real sense of fear running through Face Control, not unlike OK Computer; the difference is that Handsome Furs hold out hope for the future, believing that one day, we’ll tame technology, or at least be able to co-exist with it and still hold onto our souls. Maybe it’s because they’re in love, but Boeckner and Perry can make even the coldest techno beat sound like the beat of a heart.
