Twilight at carbon lake

My tastes don’t often stray too far from the indie pop-rock formula, and sometimes I think that closes me off to some great music.  Case in point,  Atlanta’s Deerhunter, who released a superb album in 2008 called Microcastle.  The album had been on my radar due to it’s early leak to the ‘net, but based on my lukewarm reaction to front man Bradford Cox’s other 2008 project, Atlas Sound, I wasn’t overly eager to give Microcastle a good listening.

Foolish Jim.  What we have here, folks, is a fine example of how to blend the hazy sound of early shoegaze and My Blood Valentine with the pop sensibility of Echo & the Bunnymen.  Along the way, fold in some delicious doo-wop and 50s classic pop influences and the resulting wall of sound is utter intoxicating.

Microcastle has a brother album called Weird Era Cont. which the band recorded afterwards, but released at the same time.  Together, they make for one of the most compelling releases of they year, and one I’m sad to say I missed the first time ’round.  Better late than never, I guess.
