I never read the Thomas Hardy novel Tess of the D’Ubervilles in university.  The only Thomas Hardy novel I ever (attempted to) read was Jude The Obscure.  I think Canadian band The D’Ubervilles chose the better of the two titles to name themselves after, as any reference to obscurity in a band name is a sure-fire way to find yourselves perpetually overlook and under-appreciated.

The D’Ubervilles certainly aren’t under-appreciated, as they have become one of the most prominent bands to emerge from the burgeoning music scene in Guelph, Ontario, the university town where Tim Burton and John O’Reagan (originally from Oshawa) met Kyle Donnelly.  Along with a rotating crew of drummers, the band earned a reputation as a devastatingly tight live act.  Their self-financed first collection, We Are The Hunters was released a year ago to much acclaim and praise, earning them a slot as the opening act for many up-and-coming Canadian acts, as well as showcase slots at Pop Montreal and North By Northeast.

2009 sees them back on the road , crisscrossing Canada and the U.S., making a stop at South By Southwest where they’ll definitely make a name for themselves.  The band is also planning on releasing more material in 2009, ensuring that The name The D’Ubervilles isn’t falling into any kind of obscurity soon.
