I wish to draw your attention to a cozy little quintet from Vancouver B.C. who go by the name Wintermitts. Then band have been playing together since 2005, and have shared the stage with luminaries like You Say Party! We Say Die!, Julie Doiron, and Laura “Robot Ponies” Barrett. Their last release, Heirloom, is a bilingual set of folk-forged melodies of the lo-fi variety. I love that their doesn’t seem to be a clear M.O. to their sound; each track exists in its own little sphere, and Wintermitts know well enough to let the ball roll where it may. heirloom was produced by Shawn Cole (You Say Party! We Say Die!) and co-produced by Futcher (The Be Good Tanyas). It comes in a lovely eco-packaging that looks like a seed packet. The band even include a seed packet of heirloom tomatoes with each disc, ensuring that “your love for this band will keep growing long after your first listen”.

I want to offer a profound apology to all readers and especially Dan Geller, Mark Mallman, and Aaron Lemay of Ruby Isle, because in my haste to push out a post for yesterday, I didn’t really properly look at all the information they sent regarding their latest cover in the Elbo.ws project. For some reason, I thought the band had covered “Blood Bank” by Bon Iver, when they actually covered “Skinny Love”. That would account for why the Ruby Isle version didn’t sound anything like the the original to me. Sometimes it’s hard to juggle blog life and real life, and cutting corners can lead to (huge) mistakes like this one. To all who downloaded the track erroneously, I apologize, and to the bands, my apologies for clearly not taking the time to get the message straight.
Forest City Lovers is great. So is Wintermitts here. Two more go on the ever-expanding list of things I need to buy soon. With respect: damn you, Jim.
Just doing my job!
