Primary colours

Like the Elvis Costello songs says, I feel like a man out of time.  When it was in its prime, I didn’t pay much attention to the droning, feedback drenched alt-rock of bands like Pavement and Dinosaur Jr., or really whole -heartedly embrace shoegaze (although I made exceptions for My Bloody Valentine and Ride).  Now, as a new wave of artists look to the mid-90s for inspiration, I’m drawn to bands like Phillipines’ Moscow Olympics and Brooklyn’s The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart like a moth to the flame.

Joining the ranks of these fine bands is Truro/Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Kestrels, who’ve crafted a lovely 7″ single called “Seaside b/w On Our Time”.  It’s an ambitious-sounding record, but there’s not a sense of arrogance about them as some young upstarts are wont to do.  Actually, I was quite surprised by their sound.  Kestrels have managed to craft a single of many layers and not let themselves get drowned in the sound.  There’s clearly a focus through the guitar haze and feedback, and it definitely is sparking some interest in Primary Colours, their full-length debut coming out later this year.  The b-side is equally impressive.  I love the vocal harmonies and can’t stop thinking about how much it sounds like The Boo Radleys’ album Everything’s Alright Forever.  I’d love to post both tracks for you, but then that might stop some of you from going and buying the beautifully packaged 7″ from Noyes Records (I’m really getting into a lot of vinyl these days, especially 7″ singles); when you do, you’ll get a download code for the digital version of the tracks, too.  Hint hint.
