Stealing tomorrow

Life has been a little hectic the last few days, and I’ve barely had a chance to catch my breath.  Yesterday it was back to work after my vacation, and between making sure I had enough clean underwear to make ot through the week and grocery shopping and de-traumatizing my cats (they have big abandonment issues) it was all I could do to get a post or two done.  Actually, I only got one done, which was yesterday’s discussion of the new Decemberists album, which I fully intended to post today, which obviously didn’t happen as I never got around to writing a post for Monday, so I had to steal today’s post for yesterday.  Get it?  It’s enough to make you want to take another vacation.

Luckily today we can put the brakes on a bit and enjoy the majestic sounds of Great Lake Swimmers. Tony Dekker’s effortless folk-pop musings always stop me in my tracks, and their newest song “Pulling On A Line” is an effervescent elixir for all your ailments.  Its a much bolder musical statement than he’s made in the past, tighter and sleeker thanks in part to his excellently honed band.  At the heart, though, are Dekker’s velvet smooth vocals (which remind me of Sufjan Stevens) and the timeless songs sound like old friends come to visit.  The single precedes the band’s fourth album proper, Lost Channels, set for release on March 31.  Earlier this year Dekker worked on the soundtrack for Song Sung Blue, the documentary about a pair of Neil Diamond tribute singers that’s worth checking out for his evocative cover of the doc’s title track.
