Hot freaks

I’m getting ready for a trip to California at the end of this week, hooking up with my family, whose abandoned me in  the dead cold of a Southern Ontario winter (although there’s zero snow on the ground right now, and the thermometer says 5ºC).  Not sure exactly what kind of mischief and mayhem I may get up to while I’m away, but I’m certainly pissed that I’ll be missing Bishop Allen at the Troubadour in L.A. by a couple of days.  That disappointment is nothing compared to the annual shame and grief I feel at having to miss the SxSW Festival in Austin, which will happen the weekend of March 18-22, 2009.  Day job and other commitments usually keep me from going, so I’m relegated to living vicariously through other blog writers’ journals.

Six blog writers, actually.

Aquarium Drunkard, Chromewaves, Gorilla Vs Bear, Largehearted Boy, My Old Kentucky Blog, and You Ain’t No Picasso have banded together for the last three years to present Hot Freaks, a pretty amazing series of performances at the annual event that pretty much solidifies their individual reputations for being the vanguard of music blogging, and shows the massive influence that music blogs can have.  Matt from You Ain’t No Picasso is the dude who first introduced me (and quite a few other people) to Bishop Allen, so it’s cool that they’ll be making an appearance on Friday March 20th on the first day of Hot Freaks.  For those who are planning on heading to Austin, the full Hot Freaks line-up can be pursued at the official site.

Bishop Allen officially release their new album, Grrr… this Tuesday, and you can check back to QBiM then for my take on the disc.  Until then…
