This tornado loves you

There are few female vocalists who can make me swoon, but none seems to have the intoxicating power of Neko Case.  Neko gets me dizzy, makes me drunk, whispers in and nibbles at my ear, caresses and slaps my cheek all at once.  She could sing the phone book and I would be enthralled.

When I heard that she would be releasing Middle Cyclone today, part of me wanted to wait until the album was physically released before I actually listened to it, sort of in a delayed gratification kind of way.  It’s been so long since I enjoyed an album in that way, hot of the presses as it were, with a physical product in my hand.  Of course, the other part of me just couldn’t wait to hear what the follow-up to Fox Confessor Brings The Flood would sound like.  At the very least, I was able to hold out and not listen to any of the early singles and leaked tracks until there was a full stream of the album available.

Middle Cyclone is a rewarding experience.  her trademark country/blues/gospel sound has a nice polish to it, which serves her voice well, and showcases the breadth of her songwriting talent.  It is a subdued affair, without any of the overt pop anthems that she’s sung so powerfully on New Pornographers albums.  Solo Neko is contemplative Neko, and that’s a nice change in gear.  I’ve been hypnotized by “Vengeance Is Sleeping” and lulled into a peaceful drunken buzz by “Middle Cyclone” and can’t think of a better way to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon than letting this cyclone carry me away to Oz.
