Ottawa’s Amos The Transparent have a new EP that they’ll be selling from the stage, as it were, when they hit the road in the next little while. As a progression from their debut LP Everything I’ve Forgotten to Forget, the new EP, entitled My, What Big Teeth You Have…, Amos The Transparent have hardened up the sound, playing louder, brasher guitars, and filling the void with some delectably fuzzy distortion. That huge, epic sound of the first album is still intact though, and it’s quickly becoming the band’s trademark. Opener “This Town” is four minutes of pure power. “Up, Up and Away” lightens things up a bit, but only for a bit, as about a third of the way through the band poke you awake with shuddering guitars. “Greater Than Consequence” treads more familiar terrain, but is no less thrilling. Against a simple acoustic guitar, the band layers lush harmonies, and manages to sound just as cinematic as the previous bombastic tracks. Amazing.
This is a much bolder and brazen band than the one that recorded Everything I’ve Forgotten to Forget, almost to the point of becoming unrecognizable. Still one thing remains the same, Amos The Transparent are one of Canada’s most interesting new bands, unafraid to take risks and walk a path less traveled by their peers. On the strength of this EP, big things are coming for Amos The Transparent, and they’ll be coming soon.
