Mansion haunting

I don’t even know where or how to start to describe Slim Twig to the uninitiated.  Fuzzy, droning rockabilly that sometimes lacks both direction and tune, his pair of EPs released/reissued earlier this year are still oddly intriguing.  Where someone giving Twig a passing glance may just hear tuneless babbling, a closer listen reveals a very self-assured performer who has invested himself wholeheartedly into his music.  He’s vulgar, vivid, cryptic and caustic; he’s definitely not The Acorn.

And yet, Slim Twig is now label mates with our favourite Ottawans, haunting the house at Paper Bag Records, who are set to release his full-length debut, Contempt! on June 9.  “Young Hussies” is one of that album’s disjointed ditties, while “An Austere Gentleman” is from the EP Derelict Dialect from last year.  I thought both tracks would offer you a better sense of what Slim Twig is all about, but even now I’m thinking that these two tracks don’t even scratch the surface, since they don’t take into account the cold, mechanical sounds on his other EP from last year, Vernacular Violence.  The plan for Slim Twig, clearly, is to have no plan, so there’s really no way to pin him down. He’s a slippery snake charmer and defies description, and I’m guessing that’s exactly the way he likes it.

Do not attempt to eat chocolate while listening to Slim Twig, you may accidentally eat too much and then have scary dreams and a tummy ache at night.  Happy Easter, friends.
