Shangri-La

Back in February I wrote about the new M. Ward album, Hold Time, commenting that it is has “allowed music to take a breather from the breakneck speed of technology and optimization”. Lately, I’ve been coming back to this album and giving it further listening, because the breakneck speed of new releases in the last couple of months has almost made me forget it. It’s definitely an album worth revisiting, so if you’re out and about this weekend, I highly recommend looking into procuring yourself a copy; after all, tomorrow is Record Store Day. It’s your duty to buy a some thing, whether its vinyl, CD, or a gaudy AC/DC belt buckle, from a hardworking, retail-store operating independent record store operator. And why not choose Hold Time for that purchase? Ward is one of the finest roots music songwriters working in America today, and has developed such a strong connection to the history of American music that his songs float in the timeless ether of the classics. He goes hand-in-hand with rooting through a milk crate full of vinyl just waiting to be discovered.
Ward’s cover of Buddy Holly’s “Rave On” is the latest single to be released from the album, and he’s got a new video for it, which you can see below. Ward is also set to take the stage at Coachella tonight, with a series of dates from now through August that will take him across the U.S. and Canada.
