Throwing back the covers

I love getting something special in the mail, be it digital or physical mail.  On Thursday, I got a concise email from France, specifically from a duo who record under the name The Bilinda Butchers (an homage to My Bloody Valentine’s ethereal-voiced guitarist), who sent me an unexpected treat:  a cover of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart’s “This Love Is Fucking Right!”.  The ‘Butchers distill the song down to its purest elements: guitars, vocals, and ambient backing track.  They accomplish two things:  a) demonstrate their skills as acoustic/indie pop musicians, and b) that The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart are great songwriters and not just shoegaze wanna-bes.  I’m totally digging this cover, and look forward to hear more from Michalek and Adam (no last names provided) very, very soon.

You now who else is going to like getting something in the mail?  QBiM reader Justin from NYC, who is the winner of Swoon, the new CD from Silversun Pickups.  Congratulations, Justin, and thanks to everyone who entered our contest last week.  Keep your eyes peeled for more opportunities to win at QBiM.

Ottawa’s favourite sons and daughters, The Acorn were on CBC Radio’s Q this past Thursday to play and chat with super-host Jian Ghomeshi.  Definitely not mash potatoes minus the gravy.

I’ve been sitting on The Darcys‘ cover of Final Fantasy’s “The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead” that replaces the violin with guitars and adds a shot of adrenaline to the tempo.  Interesting choice for a guitar band, but I think it works.  Look for this cover to be a 7″ some time soon.

Paper Bag Recoring artist Josh Reichmann Oracle Band have a cover of Deerhunter’s “Agoraphobia” on their new digital-only EP, Shivering Black EP.

Speaking of Paper Bag Records and cover songs, Winter Gloves recently paid tribute to Kurt Cobain by releasing a cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.  The ‘Gloves are touring with party band of the moment Thunderheist across North America now.
