Eff’n eh!

Anyone who’s heard the album Hometowns will not be surprised to hear that The Rural Alberta Advantage have been signed by Saddle Creek Records, who will reissue the band’s excellent debut this summer. That also means that RRA will be on the road to support the reissue, and hopefully coming to a venue near you (and me) soon. For those who don’t recall, Hometowns held a place of honour on QBiM’s 2008 Favourite Albums list, where they were described thus:
“…what one would imagine Arcade Fire would sound like if they came from Regina… They are sitting on the precipice of the next wave of Canadian bands who can incorporate indie-rock with what is traditionally referred to as “Canadiana” without sounding like, well, Blue Rodeo.”
It couldn’t have happened to a better, or more deserving band. I’m just wondering whether this would justify us putting Hometowns on this year’s favourites list, too.

The Dears have released another track (as promised) from their collection of b-sides, alternate versions and new material. This week Murray Lightburn offers up the first version of one of Missiles‘ best tracks–before he felt confident enough to share it with anyone, even his wife (who eventually sang the songs first part on the album).
In related Dears news, I just heard on As It Happens that The band’s van was stolen from a lot in Montreal the very morning they were to begin their Canadian tour at Toronto’s Mod Club. “We’re kind of astonished that a whole bus can get stolen — it’s so Grand Theft Auto that it’s almost surreal.” Bonkers, I tell you.
Glasvegas have recorded a Daytrotter session, and I can’t be more chuffed.
I forgot to mention that this week’s Contrast Podcast was all about saying Yes. And yes, I did.
