Back in 2007 I was introduced to The Antlers through their take-it-for-free EP, In the Attic of the Universe. Lead Antler Peter Silberman was pretty much a solo artist on that release, crafting intricate Grizzly Bear-meets-Arcade Fore melodies that really did sound like they were beamed in from the Milky Way’s upper floor. For the band’s latest, Hospice, Silberman has recruited Michael Lerner and Darby Cicci and documented their transformation into a proper band, and one of the leading rights on the indie rock scene in 2009. Hospice is a grand record wrapped in an old, worn sweater that’s at turns comfy and comforting, then itchy and abrasive. Silberman’s plaintive wail on “Epilogue” is a heartbreaking performance, and one of the album’s highlights. Elsewhere, the band has gelled into a focused three-piece with the scope and vision to see the bigger possibilities in a what others may consider just a simple song.
If you’re an eMusic subscriber, I’d definitely recommend shilling out 10 of your monthly downloads for this fantastic record. It’s quickly becoming one of my favourites of 2009.
