Parallel-o-gram

There’s an endearing charm to the music Randolph Chabot makes under the name Deastro. It reminds me of M38 in that stylistically and sonically it’s inspired by the music of my own youth, so there’s a sense of nostalgia for the listener (in this case, me) but not for the musician, seeing as he’s only 22 and can’t be nostalgic for a time he never experienced. What he has experienced in his short life is filtered through chiming synth washes, propulsive beats and soaring melodies. He’s honed his craft to perfection, making music since the age of 12, and is now ready to set the world’s hearts afire with his debut album, Moondagger, released June 23.
But before that album hits the streets, Deastro already has a free instrumental EP available as we speak at his blog. The Grower EP mines similar veins of electro-synth-pop gold, and is a great example of Chabot’s prolific work. Time is going to tell whether Deastro’s sound will have any staying power, but in just a short period of time, the album has really grown on me. It’s that sense of familiarity that hooks you in, but it’s Chabot’s sincerity that keeps you listening and intrigued.
