Shyness is nice but shyness can stop you…

… from getting the attention of a fickle blogger like me. Now, you know me well enough to know that I have a thing for sexy-voiced, female-fronted Euro-disco outfits that lay down sweet beats and sugary studio trickery. So you may have been wondering to yourself, “hey why is it that Jim has never blogged written about sleek, sexy, Swedish siren Sally Shapiro?” The reason is simple: because I’m convinced she doesn’t exist.
At least, not in the way that I want her to exist. I know that Sally Shapiro is a pseudonym. According to Wikipedia, who reference an October 2008 article in Exclaim! magazine, Shapiro producer Johan Agebjörn says that they “chose [the name] Sally Shapiro because we were inspired by artists like Valerie Dore and Katy Gray, who also had a team of producers and writers behind them using the name of a singer as the title for the project”. Whomever the voice behind this project is, she’s not quick on revealing too much of herself. She’s refused all requests for interviews and has never performed live, citing an inhuman level of shyness and modesty for her self-imposed solitude.
Bollocks, I say. It’s all a little too convenient, don’t you think: A shy girl who doesn’t like to talk to the press and doesn’t want to be on stage in front of an audience, and only exists as a disembodied voice on a series of pretty cool disco records. I smell a Polkaroo.
Anyway, Miss Mystery Shapiro will release a new album, My Guilty Pleasure (August 25), that’s once again produced by Agebjörn. The lead single, “Miracle” is available through Paper Bag Records Digital, backed by a remix that is available for you below. No word yet if she’s going to make any public appearances in support of the release (big surprise!) but you can bet that I’ll be all over that like white on bread.
