This time things will be different

And so they are.  On Thursday, Bloc Party debuted a new single aimed squarely at the dance floor.  Their flirtations with dance music have never been this overt; “One More Chance” is, not surprisingly, a pretty infectious, yet innocuous offering from one of the UK’s most challenging acts of the 2000s.  The evolution of Bloc Party from ragged indie guitar dadaists to dance floor-filling darlings isn’t unnatural given their recorded output.  It’s not like they suddenly made the jump from one genre to the next (like say, when Sub Sub became Doves); there’s been sign post all along the way.  “One More Chance” is probably the most direct pop song they’ve ever recorded, so no doubt that there will be detractors and naysayers, but I have to to tell you, I like it.  Maybe I’m biased because I really like Bloc Party to begin with, but I’m not beyond being critical of some of their choices (Need I remind you of my reaction to “Mercury” last summer?).  What I appreciate most about Bloc Party is that they’re workaholics-in-progress, meaning they’re not afraid to go in and work on something and let us hear it warts and all.  Of course, there’s rarely a blemish of note.  The single is on August 10, but I don’t have any details about formats yet.  I’ll let you know more when I hear.  For now, you can go below to hear “One More Chance” (with thanks to Will at We All Want Some for bringing us the track).
