It’s with much sadness that I bring you news of the death of Martin Streek, a prominent voice on the Toronto (and by turns the Canadian) music scene for over 20 years. Streek was found dead at his home Monday from an apparent suicide. He was 45.
Streek had been a constant and familiar voice on radio station 102.1 The Edge, formerly the much celebrated CFNY 102.1 The Spirit of Radio. Streek’s last job at the station was as an on-air personality, but his history at the station goes beyond his time in front of the mic. As a high school student, Streek began interning at the station, helping to take the mobile CFNY Video Road Show to high school and college campuses across southern Ontario, and eventually worked his way up to bening the host of the station’s weekly shows The Thursday 30 Countdown and Sunday night broadcasts from local clubs and concert halls.
Two months ago, Streek was let go from the station, apparently in a downsizing move. He was one of the last remaining employees from the station’s early days, and someone who truly embodied the vision of the original station. It has been many years since I could rightfully call myself a 102.1 listener, but whenever I did tune in, it was to hear Streek. He was a voice of knowledge and intelligence when it came to music, a fearless programmer who wasn’t afraid to play what some might call teh unpopular choice, and he was a champion of local musicians and Canadian artists. Martin Streekwas, is, and forever will be remembered as the Spirit of Radio.
