NEW MUSiC: The Hidden Cameras “Walk On”

(photo: mutesong.com)
The first thing that struck me when I heard the “Walk On”, the new track from The Hidden Cameras, is how much band leader Joel Gibb sounds like Neil Osborne of 54•40 (now there’s a blast from the past for you). I don’t mean that as an insult whatsoever, but the comparison has me wondering about the direction The Hidden Cameras are taking on their new album, Origin:Orphan (set for release September 22). Back in 2003, on the fabulous The Smell Of Our Own, the emphasis was on a sugary orchestral pop that was heard through a drunken fuzzy haze, with Gibb’s lightest of light lilts sounding like it’s coming at you down an echoing telephone line. In contrast, “Walk On” is a heavy, almost plodding affair that’s the darkest I’ve ever heard them sound. According to the Arts & Crafts website, Origin:Orphan is The Hidden Cameras “most spirited sounding record to date”. We’ll see.
You can have a listen to the new track below, and for good measure and fair comparison, I’ve included one of my favourite ‘Cameras tracks, “Golden Streams” from the aforementioned The Smell Of Our Own. Which do you prefer?
