Broken Social Scene ⇆ Joy Division

I’ve never read The Time Traveler’s Wife, but I think that after seeing the trailer for the movie adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger’s novel, I don’t think I really need to.  It doesn’t appear that there’s any interesting bit of storyline left for the movie itself to reveal.  That’s a shame, because I know that at some point, I am eventually going to sit through (or at least fast forward through) it just to get to the part where, as the band at Rachel McAdam’s and Eric Bana’s wedding, Broken Social Scene play a truly magnificent version of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart”.

Kevin Drew handles the vocal duties on this half-speed slice of sonic delight.  The song is definitely an inspired choice given the premise of the movie and the scene which it’s from, and the pairing of song and artist is equally as inspired.  BSS rarely do covers (if ever?), and I think based on the strength of this one, an album of BSS-ified classic modern rock songs would go down a storm.

Thanks to Stereogum and Sound Verite’ for bringing us this excellent bit of news.  The Time Traveler’s Wife is in theatres today.  I’m hitting the road for Montreal tomorrow, so have yourself a fan-bloody-tastic weekend, friends!
