Destroyer unleashes “Bay of Pigs”

Yesterday Mika, today, Destroyer.  Could these posts be any more opposite?  Perhaps, but the one thing they do have in common is that both have new music out that could loosely be called “disco”.  In the case of Destroyer, Dan Bejar has created a 14-minute epic movement entitled “Bay of Pigs”, apparently about the 1961 Cuban invasion of the same name.  Like anything Bejar does under the name Destroyer, this song manages to weave all kinds of loose threads into its looser narrative.  Though it starts in an ambient haze that pulses and grows, the song eventually evolves into a fairly straight-ahead synth-dance song that doesn’t sound like any Destroyer song I know.

That’s probably the reason why I’m actually liking this song.  I admit that Destroyer’s music is often beyond my scope of understanding, and perhaps I should take a lesson from Frank Chromewaves and just accept Bejar’s work, rather than try and understand it.  With that in mind I’m going to give Trouble In Dreams another go-round; I liked “Foam Hands” well enough but never really took to the rest of the album.  While I do that, you should head over to Stereogum and streaming “Bay of Pigs” for yourself.  Merge Records is releasing it as a limited edition vinyl 12′ single (with download codes) on August 18, with “Ravers” (played completely on analogue synthesizers) on the B-side.  Bejar has shows scheduled through the late summer and early fall, and I would love to know how often he plays this track.
