Let be be absolutely clear about this:
I HAVE NOT POSTED THE NEW RADIOHEAD SONG AS A FREE DOWNLOAD.
I will, however, certainly provide all the links you need to get this gorgeously orchestrated tribute to British WWI veteran Harry Patch, who died on July 25 at the age of 111. Patch fought at the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917, and revisited the site 90 years later. Patch was a fervent pacifist, and remarked on the occasion that war “isn’t worth one life”, and was no more than “calculated and condoned slaughter of human beings”. After reading an interview with Patch, Thom Yorke was inspired to write a song about him–the first new Radiohead material since In Rainbows.
The song is available from Radiohead’s WASTE.UK.COM website for a small donation that will go towards the British Royal Legion. You can follow the links below to get your copy:
10 years ago today, my father lost his fight to cancer. Though so much has changed for me since then, it feels like it all just happened yesterday. In the days before he passed, I found some odd comfort and peace by listening to OK Computer. I’m not sure what it was, but something about it clicked with the emotional state I was in; I reflected on all the great memories I had of my dad, cried at the imminent loss of him, and found the strength to move forward into an unknown future without him there. It’s made it hard to listen to the album since then, but today, it will soundtrack my day, and remind me of those precious memories. I love you Dad, and I miss you very much. You’ll always be my hero.
