With friends like these…

I don’t know if it’s quite zeitgeist material, but there certainly is the sense that Friends in Bellwoods, a compilation album curated by Casey Mecija and James Bunton of Ohbijou, captures a musical moment in time.  Based out of Mecija’s home in the Bellwoods area of Toronto, the compilation featured 36 performances by some of Canada’s most acclaimed independent musicians, performing new music, demo versions of songs yet-to-be-released, and some pretty choice covers, too.  Aside from being a killer compilation, Friends In Bellwoods was also a fund-raising campaign for Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Basket; the proceeds from record sales has put $11, 000 in the food bank’s coffers since first being released in 2006.

Friends in Bellwoods 2 is out today.

Now, three years on, there’s a new compilation, Friends in Bellwoods 2, boasting 40 choice new and rare music from the same bevy of fantastic Canadian independent musicians.  Who in particular, you say?  Well there’s some stuff from Final Fantasy, Gentleman Reg, Bruce Peninsula, Timber Timbre, The Rural Alberta Advantage and The Acorn.  Yeah, I though that might get your attention.

The new compilation is out today on Out Of This Spark, and I’ve made sure you have plenty of opportunity to secure yourself a copy below, whist sampling a few of the tracks available.
