CONTEST: VanGaalen gathers no moss nor Black Mold, but you might.

Hope you’re having a fantastic Sunday, friends.  Nothing to in depth today, just a few odds and sods I wanted to share with you from the last little while.

Awesome guy Matthew from Ottawa’s premier blog i (heart) music went on his honeymoon this week and asked yours truly to fill in as a guest blogger for him while he was away.  I was honoured to be asked, and happy to spread the word about some of the best Niagara-based music to other parts of the nation.  You can check out my guest post here.

Chad VanGaalen, whom I still have no emotional connection to, has rleased a free EP of B-sides from 208′s Soft Airplane.  You’ll recall that its one of the LPs vying for tomorrow night’s Polaris Music Prize, I’m sure.  To procure yourself this free EP, just go here.

MP3: Chad VanGaalen “Stuffed Animal”

If you’ve read down this far, then good for you!  You’ve found the hidden contest in the middle of teh post.  I have a copy of the LP Snow Blindness Is Crystal Antz by Black Mold, VanGaalen’s instrumental electro-alter-ego to give to the first person who emails  CONTESTS [at] QUICKBEFOREITMELTS [dot] COM with the words “SNOW BLIND ME, YOU CRYSTAL ANTZ!” in the subject line and your full mailing address in the body.

MP3: Black Mold “Tetra Pack Heads”
MP3: Black Mold “Metal Spider Webs”

Merge Records, home of Arcade Fire and Caribou (last year’s Polairs winner to stay with a theme), have been celebrating their 20th anniversary all year long with a pretty massive music festival, special limited edition releases, and a coupe of pretty groovy (get it, record groove?) books.  Our Noise:  the Story of Merge Records is an extensive tome by reporter John Cook, with help from Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance, the founders of Merge, and members of the label’s flagship band, Superchunk.  If you enjoyed the Broken Social Scene book I wrote about earlier this year, then you’ll get a kick out of this one, too.  The one book that I’m most interested in and can’t wait to get my hands on is The Merge Records Companion, an amazing visual discography of the label’s first 20 years.  It’s a CD-sized book that contains photos of every 7″, CD, EP, LP and DVD the label has ever released.  Proceeds from the sale of this limited edition volume will go to charity.  You can pre-order it here, and while you’re there shop around for some of the other great anniversary items the label has.
