Auspicious beginnings

I like the idea of a gift that keeps on giving, and Hamilton’s The Rest are about to give their fans just that.  Just as the band have secured a UK deal for their lovely album, Everyone All At Once, they’re preparing to release a new EP, The Cried Wolf Book, that will be accompanied by an illustrated novel.  The first track (and first part of the novel) are available now, with subsequent songs and sections being released on November 1, December 1, and January 1 through Auteur Recordings.

The first track is a cover of Robyn’s “With Every Heartbeat”.  I wasn’t familiar with the original, but as luck would have it, fellow blogger Andy over at Tympanogram posted both The Rest’s version alongside Robyn’s version, for comparison’s sake.  The verdict:  I prefer The Rest’s angsty take on the crackerjack dance pop original, but I’m a sucker for Robyn’s brand of electro-pop fancy footwork, so it’s practically a draw.  What do you think?

I think The Rest’s version gets the actual heartbreak across more.

Unless I wanted to dance through the pain, I’ll take their version.
