I don’t know why I never really bothered paying any attention to You Say Party! We Say Die! before now, but it could have to do with that ridiculous sounding name, or the fact that they were described to me as “dance punk”, a term that I have come to loathe as much as “alterna-pop”. Calling a band’s sound dance punk makes me think that they’re a) derivative, and b) boring; throwing together two contrasting genres isn’t going to pique my interest.
What will pique my interest is a pretty fantastic sounding multi-voiced mid-tempo ballad like “Heart of Gold” that destroys all previous conceptions about what/who this band are all about. The song has a remarkable depth to it, and reveals a true heart of gold beating beneath its surface. The band isn’t afraid to skirt around the darker edges of its sound, with the likes of “XXXX/Loyalty” sounding like a cross of Polly Jean and Siouxsie feasting on late 80s industrial goth pop. Referencing David Lynch’s most tragic heroine in the bloody fantastic “Laura Palmer’s Prom” makes me nostalgic for the Twin Peaks parties my friends and I used to have to watch one of the best shows ever on TV.
Paper Bag Records has released the band’s latest LP, XXXX and its available now at all your favourite music retailers. If you’re in need of some spooky dance-beat tunes for a pre-Halloween party, YSP!WSD! have just the kind of killer tunes you need.
Oh man, that last sentence sounds about as ridiculous as “dance punk”.
