Canadians are familiar with the ongoing joke about Americans who ask Canadians they meet if they know their friend/cousin/college sweetheart who lives/moved/was exiled to Canada, assuming every Canadian knows everyone else living in the country. Remembering how many times I’ve been asked if I know Bob/Earl/Jean-Pierre who lives in Toronto/Montreal/Burnaby, I got a chuckle out of an email from one of my new PR friends asking me if I know Hawksley Workman. He says in the email that “just about every Canadian has” and I would have to disagree. Just about every Canadian as hip and cool as me as heard of him, but Workman remains an enigma to most of his countryfolk, which is truly a shame. He’s a multiple Juno Award winner (think Grammys for people who say “eh”) who is also a damn fine producer, who’s handy work in the studio is all over Hey Rosetta’s Into Your Lungs (and around your heart and on through your blood), on which you can read more about here.
Workman is about to embark on a five-city coast to coast tour of the U.S. to coincide with the first U.S. release of his 2000 debut album For Him and the Girls. He’ll be hitting San Francisco tonight, and then making his way to L.A. tomorrow, Chicago on the 25th, New York on the 28th and ending in Philly on the 29th. For Him and the Girls has a U.S. street date of November 17. The email also mentions that he’s working on some new material (it actually says “albums” so I’m not sure if that’s just a type-o or there really is more than one) that will probably arrive some time at the beginning of 2010. For the uninitiated, a great place to start is with his debut, and then make your way through the subsequent nine albums. A taste is offered up below. Enjoy.

Thanks for hipping me to him. I’d only heard his odd name before but never bothered to research. Really loving this. You’re the best, as usual.
