Lightning Dust strikes twice

I don’t know whether it’s just a case of bloggers thinking alike, but it never fails that just when I strike on something new and exciting, I find that this guy or those guys posted it a few days (or months!) earlier.  Great minds, I guess, and all that stuff they say about them.  That was the case when I was checking out Matthew’s post about Lightning Dust–the Black Mountain side project featuring Amber Webber and Joshua Wells–on i (heart) music yesterday.  Matt risked having to turn in his indie-rock-geekdom ID card for saying that he enjoys Black Mountain side projects, but I for one am glad that he’s stepped forward and said it, because I’ve been thinking the same thing for awhile.

Granted, before hearing Lightning Dust the only Black Mountain side project I was aware of was Pink Mountaintops, but I can get behind Lightning Dust no problem.

Infinite Light, the band’s second LP, is a messed up blend of Americana-influenced folk/country/rock that isn’t afraid to get a little freaky.  I think it’s what German country-and0western would sound like if such a thing existed.  Those familiar with Lightning Dust’s previous record will note that things get pushed into more psychedelic terrain this time out, a nod to the Black Mountain aesthetic, I’m sure.  I’m particularly smitten with the delicate piano duet “Honest Man”, whose call-and-response style reminds me of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra.  It’s haunting, hypnotic and ever so slight hallucinogenic.  That’s definitely a pill I can swallow.  Hell, I’m overdosing on it as we speak.  A-MAZE-ING.

Like anything Black Mountain-esque, Infinite Light is released by Jagjaguwar, and is available now.  If you check it out and like it, go and dig up their 2007 self-titled debut–it’s a kicker, too.

I stand corrected. They are sisters, so it’s an honest mistake. One I won’t make again. Or else the blog patrol will come and get me.
