NEW MUSiC: The Raveonettes

I liked Lust Lust Lust enough to change my mind about The Raveonettes.  Prior to their 2007 release, I found the Danish duo to be a rotating one-trick pony, with too many angles and concepts but not enough tunes.  Come on now, an album all in B flat major?  That’s not exactly broadening your horizons, is it?  There was something about Lust Lust Lust’s techni-coloured fuzzy psychedelic guitars that got my attention where their previous albums failed to impress.  “Aly, Walk With Me” and “Dead Sound” seemed to focus the trickery on being great songs, simple, guitar droning pop songs that didn’t so reinvent that Jesus & Mary Chain fuzzy sound as refine it.

In And Out of Control, the duo’s new LP, is the next evolutionary step in the band’s development.  It isn’t a massive overhaul, but a slow, steady progression that sees their songwriting skills honed, and a broader palette and tone.  Their dark, gothy undercurrent still charges the song, but the previous hinted at poppy element is given an opportunity to show its face on opening track “Bang!” and “Last Dance”.  It’s The Raveonettes we’re talking about here, so titles like “Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)” (pretty self-explanatory) make sure that these songs probably won’t end up on your favourite FM station anytime soon.
