Just a little prick

Do you have an awkward friend who makes jokes that go over like lead balloons?  You’re not exactly sure if he’s being serious or funny, or if he’s seriously trying to be funny.  For a moment, he makes you feel self-conscious and stupid, like there’s something wrong with you for not getting it; until you realize that, Hell no, he’s the one with social awkwardness.

Male Nurse kind of makes me feel that way, too; I think i get it, but I’m just not sure there’s really a joke going on.  For one thing, I hate you refer to any one’s music as a joke.  Davey Q.’s not a stand-up comedian playing music, but he certainly doesn’t take himself or his music too seriously.  One of the tracks on his new LP, Everything’s Amazing.  No One’s Happy is called “My Friends Are All Assholes” after all, and he refers to another friend as a pussy on another track that’s over ins than a minute.  If the music wasn’t such an earnest and ragged folk/rock collision it wouldn’t be anywhere near as interesting to listen to.

What blows my mind is that Male Nurse has opened for American Idol winner David Cook, and I can’t for the life of me guess how that went down with Cook’s female-heavy audiences.  Probably better than it would if he’d opened for current winner Kris Allen, but still.  Once you hear his album, you’ll agree with me, that would have been one concert to see.
