A while back, a very unassuming and nondescript email came across my screen introducing me to Digits, a Toronto-based musician who started twiddling knobs in his bedroom (and not those kind of knobs–get your mind out of the gutter!) earlier this year, and has now emerged with–yep you guessed it–his debut album!
Same story you’ve heard a hundred times before, I’m sure, but there is definitely something about Hold It Close that sets it apart from the other like-minded emails I get. For one, it’s actually pretty good stuff. Alt Altman sounds like a sedated Joel “Hidden Cameras” Gibb, less emotional and more detached. That suits the cold, clinical sounding beats and blips of his electronic dance songs just fine. Digits sounds retro without being too old school, and maybe wears his influences a little too prominently on his sleeve, but I truly get the sense that there’s more going on beneath the surface than just bedroom experimentation here. For a taste or his indie-rock/pop side, check out some of Altman’s work as a former member of Europe In Colour and The Ghost Is Dancing. While he may not be part of those acts anymore, Altman has brought some of that pop sensibility to Digits. Hold It Close is a promising start to his solo career, and worth your time and attention.

I’m pretty sure he’s still in TGID…he played with them here in Ottawa a couple of weeks ago! (Europe in Colour are definitely no more, though.)
