NEW MUSiC: The Prospector’s Union

What I love about writing a blog is having a documented record of the changes in my listening habits, and seeing the evolution/connection between records in my collection.  Have you noticed how one artist leads you to another, or how a specific record sort of opens the door to a new genre or style that you may have not listened to before, and thereby exposing you to a whole new musical branch?  What I’ve noticed lately is how I get into a regional listening pattern.  For the better half of 2009, I’ve been pitching my musical camp in Eastern Canada it seems.  I owe Bryan at Herohill.com a huge debt for turning me on to so many great acts from Nova Scotia, PEI and the surrounding regions, and the latest is a great treasure to find.

The Prospector’s Union’s Matt Charlton is better known to me as one of the guy’s whose PR firms emails me great music from east coast artists every so often (you can thank him for getting the Kestrels CDs for our contest earlier this year), but it turns out Matt’s a man of many sides.  One listen to his band’s debut EP, Syracuse reveals that he’s a seriously talented songwriter and a velevty-voiced crooner to boot.  Syracuse has been a labour of love gestating for over a year in a home studio.  It’s size has shrunk down to 5 songs from the originally intended 10, but there’s enough musicianship there to fill hundreds of records.  The Prospector’s Union fits comfortably alongside a great number of the other roots-rock, folk-pop acts I’ve been getting into lately, and they certainly make a great soundtrack to autumnal days driving with no particular destination in mind.

He’s a man of many scarves too. Get him to send over the EP he recorded for us for Band of the Month.A bit rougher, but still rock solid.
