Daniel Romano, Julie, Doiron, and Fred Squire: beautiful music
Julie Doiron is someone I’ve never paid enough attention to in these here pages, but it’s not for a lack of interest in her work. She is perhaps one of the great unsung heroes of the Canadian music scene: an indie pioneer as part of Eric’s Trip, and a consummate collaborator with Mount Eerie and Wooden Stars (to name a few), and a respected and loved solo musician in her own right. Doiron has hit another one out of the park, this time by teaming up with Attack In Black’s Daniel Romano and Calm Down It’s Monday/Shotgun and Jaybird’s Fred Squire for a truly homespun folk collaboration.
Daniel, Fred & Julie is a collection of folk standards that the trio recorded in Squire’s garage in Sackville, Nova Scotia this summer. They set up a semi-circle of folding chairs around a mic, cracked open the folk songbooks Daniel brought with him and set about arranging, working out harmonies, and fine tuning lyrics. They left the garage door open, and with cars passing in the back ground and the neighbours kids riding by on their bikes, they recorded the album with no overdubs or editing in just a couple of days.
The press release says that “this is a record unlike any previously heard from these fine and versatile musicians” and truer words were never spoken. I’m in agreement with Bryan at Herohill: Daniel, Fred & Julie is just about the best damned thing I’ve heard this year. My Welland, Ontario homeboy Romano never ceases to amaze me with his versatility and songwriting (both “Runner” and “Your Love” are new Romano compositions), proving what I’ve always felt to be true: Attack In Black are a bloody amazing roots rock band that’s just waiting to happen.
Daniel, Fred & Julie, in a word: beautiful.
