What do you do when you uproot your whole life to follow a girl across the country, and then proceed to lose both girl and all worldly possessions in a fire? If you’re Cary Pratt of Prairie Cat (get it?), you cut your losses, head back to your hometown of Kelowna, B.C. and get down to the task of putting the pieces back together again. Part of that is making enough money to buy the recording gear necessary to lay down the tracks on his second full-length, It Began/Ended with Sparks, the originals of which went up in flames in the aforementioned fire.
It’s enough to make an ordinary man just throw up his hands in defeat, but Pratt did the practical thing and channeled all that rich life experience into a collection of songs that swing from schmaltzy cabaret to classic pop. The result is a rich tapestry of sounds, and though I’ve not heard the originals that were lost in the fire, I’m sure that having gone through that experience has made these recreations even better than the originals.
