Last week I had a nice long chat with Dev from Hype Machine Radio about 2009′s hits and misses, highs and lows, and we spent a bit of time talking about New York’s The Drums. I first wrote about the band back in May, before their infectious EP Summertime! was released but haven’t mentioned them much since. The more I hear that EP, the more I think that The Drums are going to be 2010′s Pains of Being Pure at Heart: musical revivalists who take a classic sound and spin it on it’s head until its fresh and new all over again. They sound like New Order playing surf music, and remind me of the The B-52′s in a kitschy-but-serious kind of way. The band has been working on their debut full-length, due this Spring, and precede its imminent release with a new video for the track “I Felt Stupid” (on Pitchfork). Dev and I were dishing about who might be producing the album, and he let me in on a little secret: Mark Ronson tweeted this on December 31: “Playing in Chicago tonight with The Drums & The Virgins, or is it playing drums in the Virgins? Or singing like a virgin with Drums? TBC…” can you say “fuckin’ right on?”

Field Music are back with a new double album after their brief, fruit-bearing hiatus. Field Music (Measure) is out on Memphis Industries on February 16. The Brothers Brewis are back working together after David did some work under the name School of Language, and Peter graced the QBiM 2008 Favourite Albums list with his work as The Week That Was.

Secretly Swedish band jj have recently announced that they’re signing with Secretly Canadian (ha!) to release their third album, jj nº3 in North America on March 9. Pitchfork blessed them with a “Best New Music” kiss even though there’s next to nothing known about this band, other than they’re Swedish. Paste magazine called them the greatest musical obscurity of ’09. I don’t know if i get what all the hype is about. The music’s good, yes, but is it the mystery that has everyone all worked up?

Jason Boesel is better known as backing up Conor Oberst and Rilo Kiley is setting out on his own. Hustler’s Son is his Team Love debut, and it’s out this Tuesday. Think M. Ward-like roots rock with a touch of soul, as evidenced on the track “Hand of God”:
