Every once in awhile I get the odd little nugget of gold dropped in my mailbox, unadorned and unlinked, forcing me to do some digging and searching to find out anything I can about a band. I don’t think they mean to be secretive, but they certainly don’t make it overly easy. At the very least, Jody Richardson emailed me and told me that his band Pathological Lovers is from St. John’s, Newfoundland, and that they’re releasing their debut, Calling All Favours, and are looking for some Canadian blog lovin’. There’s scant little else on their Myspace page to report, and nothing on their CBC Radio 3 bio page (which I love referring to lately, by the way), so I’ll let the music (and the still from their recent video shoot, above) speak on their behalf:

Another lovely little nugget from the inbox this week was music from Newton, Masssachusetts’s The Novel Ideas. Their sophomore LP, The Sky is a Field is available as a free download from their website. You can file it under smart, literate, orchestrated pop with great male/female duet vocals.

From Merge Records comes word that they’ve signed the UK’s Let’s Wrestle and will release In the Court of the Wrestling Let’s (yes, you’re reading that right–grammar be damned, I guess) on March 23. I don’t know how this punky, pub-rock schtick may play out over a full-length release, but there’s something appealing and catchy about “We are the Men You’ll Grow to Love Soon” that at least has me curious to hear more.

Lastly, Rogue Wave make a return with their fourth LP, Permalight on March 2. “Good Morning” is a perky little slice of electro-pop that reminds me of Hot Chip for some reason. I’ve never really followed Rogue wave before, but like the Let’s Wrestle track, my curiosity has been adequately piqued for more.
