NEW MUSiC: 2 from Basia Bulat’s Heart of My Own

It’s inevitable that an artist’s second album is usually written on or partly inspired by their time on the road promoting their first release. It’s almost become a cliché in a way: gestate and nurture your debut album from years of playing the songs in seedy bars and to half-empty audiences, hit it big and take them on the road where the pressure mounts to start writing and working on new material for album 2. I don’t like to be cynical about it, but with so many musicians out there working at making music, I often reserve true judgment on ability after I’ve heard that difficult second album.
Though I haven’t actually heard all of it, I’m happy to say that Canada’s favourite quirky gal, Basia Bulat is home and dry with her sophomore album, Heart of My Own which is next week. “Gold Rush” has been available online for a few weeks now, and is instantly a bigger, bolder song than anything on her quaint Polaris Prize-nominated debut, Oh, My Darling. Late last week, “Go On” also became available online, and it follows the same vein as “Gold Rush”, albeit with a punchier, scrappier sound. The road has been good to Bulat, it seems, but then again, she proved herself a skilled and able songwriter with that first album. On these two tracks alone, you can hear that she’s stretching her wings and looking at moving forward, which is always a good thing. I can’t wait to hear the rest, and hope that will happen soon.
