NEW MUSiC: The Racoon Wedding

(photos: Owen Cherry)
I have a history with the city of Brantford, Ontario, and it ain’t pretty. It’s so not pretty that I just flat out refuse to even go there, and it’s all I can do to actually drive through it on the way to other destinations. If I can avoid it, I do.
Tim Ford and Jesse Shanks can’t avoid Brantford, but you get the sense from their music as The Racoon Wedding that there’s no better place for them to be. Together with Scott Willson, Ty Springall, and Drew Ayerhart, they’ve created Gather Gather Bones Rattle Rattle Truth, as close to a love letter to “The ‘Ferd” as you’re likely to ever hear. Matt at i(heart)music has been singing The Racoon Wedding’s praises for awhile now (bestowing them the honour of the number 3 spot on his best of 2009 list), so unfortunately I’m just getting around to this party a bit late. Be that as it may, whenever you decide to come around to Raccoon Wedding, the doors will be open and you’ll be handed a beer on your way in, and the party will still be in full swing.
Gather Gather Bones Rattle Rattle Truth is a raucous, ragged, country-rock album that’s sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. The band has released the album on their own Ford Plant Recording Co., named after the Ford Plant, an all ages not-for-profit venue/art space Wilson and Ford own in the heart (or bowels, depends on your point of view) of the native Brantford. They’re joined by some friends from the 416, including Casey Mecija of Ohbijou and Neil Haverty of Bruce Peninsula. I have to echo Matt’s sentiment that The Racoon Wedding deserve much more attention than they’re getting, but hopefully that all changes for them soon. Once you listen I’m sure you’ll agree.
