4 for the weekend 13•02•10

Although I’ve not been big into video and live clips on the blog, I do enjoy a visual treat for the sense every once in awhile, and occasionally like checking out the Live at the Guest Apartment series on Baeblemusic.com.  A little while back they posted a three-song performance by Basia Bulat that’s worth checking out, so I thought I’d embed some of it in today’s post.

I’ve been listening to The Magnetic Fields new record, Realism lately, and will probably throw in my two-cents worth about it in an upcoming post, but for those vinyl lovers out there, there’s reason to celebrate the stylings of Stephin Merritt.  His fantastic 69 Love Songs album from a few tears back has been re-mastered for vinyl and will be out on April 20.  The package will come with an mp3 download coupon so rest assured you won’t have to rip the vinyl to digital yourself.  Merge has made a taster track available for free right now, just in time for Valentine’s Day:

Speaking of ripping vinyl to digital–even though I may very well get my hand slapped for doing this–Manic Street Preachers recently released a limited edition vinyl-only remix/re-imagining of Journal For Plague Lovers called Cooking, Cleaning, and Flower Arranging. I had a copy sent across the Atlantic to me, and it’s a pretty amazing reworking of an already great album.  I did a bit of digging, and think that Patrick Wolf’s version of “This Joke Sport Severed” surfaced prior to the record’s release, so maybe I won’t get slapped too badly for letting you listen to it:

James Glaves and Jeremy Wagner are also known collectively as The Wagner Logic, formed in 2000 in Alaska.  That’s not the first place I would think of as a hotbed of shoegazey rock, but if Iceland can get all quirky on our asses, why not Alaska?  The band are setting up tour dates south of the  48th parallel, but you can sample their Pavement/Pixies inspired pop right here, right now:
