Knitting something nice for you

(source: killbeatmusic.com)

I fully admit that I’m the kind of guy who likes instant gratification:  give me the goods now and don’t make me wait.  case in point: this new fangled iPad doo-hickey.  You really think I’d wait patiently for 60 days before getting my hands on one?  Shit, I’ve bitten my nails down to the quick over less.

So earlier today when I put on Aidan Knight‘s debut album, Versicolour, I was pleasantly surprised that the extended instrumental introduction to the album’s opening track, “The Sun” wasn’t causing my finger to trigger the fast-forward button.  As a matter of fact, the elegant and haunting two-minute intro drew me right into the song itself, as it set its sombre tone for what I expected would follow.  However, once Knight’s deep and rich voice comes in, the song takes off in a new direction, as if the subject of it’s title breaks the horizon and brings the dawn on a new optimistic day.  I went back and listened to the track a couple more times before delving deeper into the rest of the album.

And what a joy there is to behold there.  Knight, a seasoned session musician, proves that he has the chops and the songs to stand on his own two feet amongst some of the country’s best songwriters.  “Fighting Against Your Lungs” reminds me of another recent favourite, Postdata, because of how both make more out of a simple arrangement than most musicians could do with a full orchestra.

Knight’s 8-song debut is out on March 2 via Adventure Boys Club.  He has been touring the west with Dan Mangan, and hopefully will make his way further east sometime soon.

Back from Europe, Postdata playing a Canadian tour that’s not a Canadian tour…

Try as we might, we can't get away from talking about Postdata , quite possibly the most pronounced…
